7 things to check before your driving test

Few things are more stressful than the final minutes of preparation before your driving test. This is the checklist that our students use to stay calm and ready for the road.

1. Paperwork, in one folder

Permit, proof of insurance, registration, and any forms the examiner asks for should live in one place. Digging through a glove box while the clock is running is how nerves start early. Put the folder on the passenger seat the night before.

2. Every light and signal

Walk the car: headlights, high beams, brake lights, reverse lights, turn signals, and hazards. Examiners often ask for a quick demonstration before you leave the lot. A burned-out bulb can end the test before it begins.

3. Tires and windshield

Check tire pressure and tread, then clear the windshield inside and out. Cracks in the driver’s sight line and bald tires are easy automatic fails. If something looks off, fix it before test day—not on the way there.

4. Seat and mirrors, set before you start

Adjust the seat, steering wheel, and mirrors before you put the car in drive. Examiners notice when drivers fiddle with settings while rolling. Get comfortable, then begin.

5. The route, driven once

If you know the general area, drive it once in the days before—not to memorize every turn, but so intersections and speed changes feel familiar. Familiar roads leave more attention for scanning and signaling.

6. Complete stops, practiced deliberately

Practice full stops behind the line until they feel automatic. Rolling stops are one of the fastest ways to fail in South Carolina. Count a full pause, check left-right-left, then go.

7. Your own head, the morning of

Sleep, eat something light, and arrive early. Rushing into the lot is the opposite of how you want to feel when the examiner opens the door. Calm is a skill—treat it like part of the test.
