Pick the route before you start
Agree on the neighborhood, parking lot, or loop. Surprise destinations raise stress. Start easy and add complexity only after the last drive felt boring.
Use short cues, not speeches
Try: “Check left.” “Signal now.” “Full stop.” Save the lecture for the driveway. Mid-maneuver explanations overload working memory.
When to stay quiet
If the car is straight, speed is legal, and scanning looks good—say nothing. Silence is feedback that things are working. Save notes for the two-minute debrief at the end.
Professional lessons and parent practice complement each other. Instructors build technique; parents build hours. Both work better when the car stays calm.
